Death By Exemption

Susan Cafferty is a successful, 45-year old trust and estates attorney with a big problem:  two very wealthy clients and a colleague have just been murdered and she is the only apparent link between all three.  The year is 2010 and because the federal estate tax has disappeared due to Congressional inaction, all three victims have left huge piles of money to their kids tax-free.  Jason Kremnitz is the sensitive 30-year old son of one victim, a cold, inscrutable hedge fund manager.  Despite repeatedly failing as a small business owner, Jason is now a millionaire many times over.  Together, these two unlikely helpmates will team up to track down the murderer.  This is premise of my new mystery novel, Death by Exemption, a thrilling but also heartfelt story of two Californians with big spaces in their lives—Susan, a family estate planner, hoping to finally marry and have children of her own—Jason, about to become a dad himself, attempting finally to figure out his purpose in life—and how they are ultimately able to resolve these issues through their quest for the murderer.

Bio

At the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, which I attended in 2013, part of the manuscript was critiqued by Anne Close, an editor at Knopf.  Ms. Close said Knopf may be interested in purchasing a revised version of the novel.  The current manuscript reflects her comments and edits.  I have also completed writing workshops at U.C. Berkeley, UCLA and the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis.  I currently work in Sacramento, California as a tax attorney, and have also practiced trusts and estates law.
